On October 7, 2008, the 2008 Mercedes-Benz "Swing for the Stars" Beijing Campus Tennis Development Program sponsored by Mercedes-Benz (China) Co. Ltd. was formally launched at Beijing No. 159 Middle School.
Five guests were invited to the activity: Mr. Gao Shenyang, Deputy Director of Tennis Sports Administration Center, General Administration of Sport; Ms. Li Huanping, President of the No. 159 School; Ms. Wang Qiqi, Representative of Mercedes-Benz (China) Co. Ltd.; Mr. Chai Taicheng, Market Director of Jamost Sporting Goods Co. Ltd., the exclusive agent of Dunlop in China; and Mr. Tom Mccarthy, CEO of Beijing International Group. At 10:00 AM, on the mini tennis court in the corner of the playground of Bejing No. 159 Middle School, the five guests took turns to swat the tennis ball, a symbol of the activity being formally launched.
This signaled that from October 13, an interesting tennis class will be added to the weekly curriculum schedules of thousand students in 20 primary and middle schools in Beijing. The "Swing for the Stars" tennis coaches who have been meticulously trained will join the students and cooperate with PE teachers to teach the basic skills and rules of tennis to students, enabling the students to experience the pleasure of the game. During the eight-week curriculum, students will be instructed based on the professional tennis training manual for youth, compiled by Jeff Bearup, United States Tennis Association Junior Coach of the Year. Each student will get professional tennis uniform and autographs of stars from the national team. What's more, every student will generate their own blog page. After training, students can register on-line to share their tennis lessons, experiences and pleasures. Upon completion of the training, each school will select their best boy and girl student athletes to attend the Mercedes "Swing for the Stars" Beijing Campus Tennis Tournament, which is to be held on December 13 - 14, 2008.
