Standard since 1992 on all Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) prevents wheel-lock and keeps the vehicle steerable in braking condition. In most cases, the system also reduces braking distance, particularly on wet or uneven road surfaces. The ABS system can be turned off manually. ABS is not a stand-alone system - its components serve as a basis for a whole range of innovative safety systems, including the Electronic Traction System (ETS), Acceleration Skid Control system (ASR) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP).
The ASR prevents the drive wheels from spinning during acceleration, improving stability. The combined intervention on the brakes and engine stabilises the traction when accelerating, and a stabilised and controlled opening of the throttle is activated when shifting down or if the accelerator pedal is suddenly released between 0 and 120 km/h (70 mph). A flashing warning light alerts the driver if the wheelspin threshold is exceeded. If the driver elects to turn off the ASR drive, the vehicle's traction is improved by selective braking only, effective up to a maximum of 80 km/h (50 mph).
