 | After its successful presentations in Berlin, London, Rome and Tokyo, the exhibition Giorgio Armani, organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and principally sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, opened in Shanghai Art Museum and presented at the Shanghai Art Museum. Originally presented at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2000, the Shanghai venue was the final stop in Asia. Giorgio Armani is recognized as one of the most influential and iconic designers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. He has been universally credited with both radically changing the rules of contemporary fashion and creating a timeless vision of modern dress. Arranged thematically, the exhibition includes clothes from various periods of designer's career, from the late 1970s when he began to achieve prominence, up to his most recent designs. More than 400 garments, original sketches, and audio-visual presentations explore the depth and range of Giorgio Armani's work. "We are proud to give our support to an exhibition of such a legendary designer as Giorgio Armani who shares our passion for design and style," says J. Justus Schneider, Director of Worldwide Marketing Communications, Mercedes-Benz, "The design characteristics of Giorgio Armani's creations, such as timeless elegance, effortless grace, high quality, and a fresh modern sensibility, are all attributes that Mercedes-Benz has admired and embraced for over 100 years." The common appreciation for design and style was documented for the first time in 1980 when a Mercedes-Benz SL and Giorgio Armani garments were paired in the movie "American Gigolo" starring Richard Gere. The idea for the collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and the Milan-based fashion designer arose following the automaker's tour sponsoring of the Salomon R. Guggenheim's 'Giorgio Armani: Retrospective' exhibition. A Mercedes-Benz CLK Design show car was then developed and unveiled in 2003. In the following year 2004, only 100 units of this elegant Giorgio Armani CLK Cabriolet offered worldwide as part of the exclusive Mercedes-Benz designo program. "We very quickly found a common language," the Milan-based fashion designer said "It was fascinating to see how Mercedes-Benz turned my design ideas into reality with such attention to detail. I think the result speaks for itself." During the opening day of 'Giorgio Armani: Retrospective' exhibition, a Mercedes-Benz SL Cabriolet shown in the movie "American Gigolo" was displayed in the entrance of Shanghai Art Museum. Later, an exclusive exhibition presenting the design tradition Mercedes-Benz SL Class Cabriolet owned was also held at the Mercedes-Benz showroom, which is opposite to Shanghai Art Museum and opened to the public. |
